Report on Hereford Amateur Operatic Society's production of "South Pacific" , May 2000

Hereford Amateur Operatic Society's production of "South Pacific" at The Courtyard, was a show of moods and emotions.

Although it starts quietly, there are some rollicking chorus scenes from a well disciplined cast. The movement and grouping are visually exciting with splendid lighting effects and it was a delight to see such a large men's chorus obviously enjoying themselves, almost being outdone by the lovely ladies.

There are those on stage, whose performances can always be relied on, Mike Tomkins, George Powell, Frank Bennett, well supported by Nigel Holloway, David van de Bergh, Steve Taylor and Charlotte Martin and some delightful talented youngsters who cope admirably with the opening of the show.

Hilary Billig gives a lively interpretation to the part of Bloody Mary. Max Gell as Lt Cable was a talented young man, captivated by Clare Smith, playing Bloody mary's daughter Liat. Her winsome performance was enchanting and just right. Richard Thomas really attacked the part of Luther Billis, his energy and personality sped the show along.

However the main accolades are reserved for Sarah Phillips as Nellie Forbush and Chris Sanderson as Emile de Becque. They were totally believable and played the parts with immaculate timing and sensitivity.

The band played along with jolity but perhaps would benefit from more brass and some strings, however the whole show is exciting and fun. The society's justified high reputation is safe in the hands of director Stephanie Austwick, who uses the Courtyard stage, complete with a simple effective set, to produce two and a half hours of stylish entertainment.

A very good show. Not to be missed.
