Hereford Musical Theatre Company

Productions - Annie

The buzz about the theatre when Hereford Amateur Operatic Society is performing is unlike any other. The highly professional local group have a great following, evident from the moment the curtain rises - or in the case of their current production, 'Annie', the moment the lights dim, for the orphans are already on stage tucked up in bed.

This is not the first time the company have visited 'Annie' (the last time was in 1985) but it is a first for first-time director Sarah Phillips - last seen performing with the company in their Autumn production of 'My Fair Lady'.

And she has not chosen the 'Easy Street' - the cast including two troops of nine children and a dog!

Set in New York, New York, during the depression of 1933, 'Annie' does not provide the easy lyrics and well-known favourites of Cabaret, Chicago or South Pacific. It's a tricky piece.
The society tackles it with their usual sense of ease and professionalism and it's a definite credit to Miss Phillips in her new role.

As usual the strong leads, notably Adele Alexander as Miss Hannigan, Tina Harwood as Grace Farrell and Richard Thomas as Rooster, are supported by an excellent chorus - the strength of the ensemble giving polish to an already promising feast.

On the evening I was enjoying the show, Rusty (Annie's canine friend) barked through an entire scene. There may have been tittering in the upper circle but there was not a smirk on stage. The show very much went on. If you're lucky enough to get a ticket before the end of this week's run, grab it.
